London- Memorial to the women who served in World War II

London- Memorial to the women who served in World War II

The largest bronze sculpture placed in the City of London - Whitehall,
The Memorial to the Women of World War II is the result of an open competition. It was won by John W. Mills. The brief asked for a monument to all the women of World War II, not individuals. John W. Mills’ winning design from an entry of 12 sprang from his own memories of the war and his mother’ s work in munitions.
It depicts the contribution of all women to the war effort through their clothing symbolically left hanging on pegs after they had returned home at the end of hostilities with their job well done.

The judges for the memorial competition were: Professor Phillip King, president of the Royal Academy of Arts (1999-2004), Dr Judith Collins, former head of modern sculpture at the Tate, and James Butler, the eminent sculptor.

Another of his works in the same genre as the Memorial to the Women of World War II is Blitz, the National Fire-fighters Memorial outside St Paul’s Cathedral. Among many other sculptures from his studios have also come The Memorial to William Blake at William Blake House in London, a magnificent 12ft-high bronze, St George, at Windsor Court Hotel in New Orleans, and a statue of Jackie Milburn, the Newcastle footballer at Ashington, Northumberland. After many machinations that germ of a dream came to fruition as The National Firefighters Memorial ' BLITZ '.

On 9 July 2005 Her Majesty The Queen unveiled The Memorial to the Women of World War Two. The bronze sculpture stands next to The Cenotaph in Whitehall one of the most important ceremonial routes in the nation. The Memorial is a permanent tribute to the contribution made by more than seven million women during 1939 – 45 and it took seven years of campaigning for a hope to become reality. Significantly, almost every family in Britain knows a woman this memorial represents.

DSC04132 Lanesborough House Hotel - Hyde Park Corner

DSC04132 Lanesborough House Hotel - Hyde Park Corner

n 1716 Henry Hoare, William Wogan, Robert Witham and Patrick Cockburn decided to open the Westminster Public Infirmary in Petty France, London in 1720, and quickly relocated to larger premises in Chapel Street in 1724. By 1732 the Governors were forced to seek an even larger building. The majority of the Governors favoured a house in Castle Lane but a minority preferred Lanesborough House.[1][2]
The original site was in Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner, originally built in 1719 by the James Lane, 2nd Viscount Lanesborough[3][4], in what was then open countryside. The new St George's Hospital was arranged on three floors and accommodated 30 patients in two wards: one for men and one for women. The hospital was gradually extended and, by 1744, it had fifteen wards and over 250 patients.[5]
By the 1800s, the hospital was slipping into disrepair. The old Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner (now the location of The Lanesborough hotel) was demolished to make way for a new 350 bed new facility. Building began in 1827 designed by architect William Wilkins and the new hospital was completed by 1844.
Among those who have been associated with St George's are:
Henry Gray, anatomist
Harry Hill, stand-up comedian and TV funny man
John Hunter, father of modern surgery
Edward Jenner, introduced vaccination for smallpox
Judah Hirsch Quastel, biochemist
Thomas Spencer Wells, pioneer in abdominal surgery
Thomas Young, physician, mathematician and hieroglyphicologist

King's Rest Motel

King's Rest Motel

The back reads:

KING'S REST MOTEL
Two miles East on U.S. 10 & 87, Billings, Montana
Telephone 9-3050
Accomodations for any size party. Each unit
uniquely equipped for comfort with Simmons Beau-
tyrest Mattresses and other furnishings to make
this your home away from home. Designed in that
new modern styling with that "Western Hospital-
ity" atmosphere. One of Montana's finest. Open
year round. Kitchenettes available. Your hosts,
Mr. & Mrs Frank Cipech

Oddly enough, I found an obit for Mary Cipech, Frank's wife. It reads:

Mary Cipech, 95, of Billings, who with her husband built the King’s Rest Motel in the Heights, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at Billings Clinic Hospital.
The daughter of Joe and Aloiziae (Lucy) Gasparovich, she was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Salida, Colo. After her father died when she was 6, her mother married Mike Bakaric and the family moved to McGill, Nev.

After she had attended school for five years, her stepfather was injured in a smelter accident and returned to Yugoslavia. When the family ran out of money, he brought Mary and two of her sisters back to the United States while her mother stayed in Yugoslavia with the seven other children for another two years. Mary learned to read and write in English and Yugoslavian.

She had worked in a bakery, a laundry, a cannery and selling candy and cigars in a bar and casino. She married Frank Cipech on May 30, 1930, in Gold Field, Neb. They lived in San Bernardino before settling in Montana.

The Cepiches built the King’s Rest Motel, now the Heights Inn, when there was no other development in the area.

Sounds like Mary had quite an interesting life. The Heights Inn is still there, though it looks nothing like the place when it was King's Rest.

Tip Top Motel main sign

Tip Top Motel main sign

Just a closeup of its main sign. It's now called the River Park Inn(IIRC), and it's been replaced with a plain plastic sign today.

I remember when the light green neon arrows used to slowly move right, till all of them were on, and I think the Tip and Top words on the sign came on at different times, till the whole sign came on all at once, like pictured here.
